WhatsApp templates

A rejected template costs you a day. These thirty are written to pass the first time.

Meta checks every WhatsApp template before you can send it. Each one here has real message text, its Meta category, a sample for every blank, and the mistakes that get it sent back. Copy one, change the details, submit it.

The library

Pick a template by what you need to send.

Meta's three categories

The category decides whether it is approved and what it costs to send.

Meta puts every template in one of three categories and prices each one separately. Pick the wrong one and the template is rejected or moved.

  • Updates

    Utility

News about something the customer did or asked for: an order, a booking, a bill, a refund.

    • No offer in it, not even a small one.
    • About one specific order or visit.
    • Feedback counts only when it names the order.
  • Selling

    Marketing

Anything meant to sell: offers, new stock, invitations, reminders to come back.

    • An update with an offer in it is Marketing.
    • Give people a button to stop these messages.
    • Send only to people who agreed to hear from you.
  • Codes

    Authentication

One-time codes for signing in or confirming that a number belongs to the person.

    • Meta writes the words; you choose the options.
    • An optional security line, and an expiry of 1 to 90 minutes.
    • No links, photos or text of your own.

Before you submit

What gets a template sent back.

These come from Meta's own template review guide. Review takes up to 24 hours, and an appeal another 24, so a fixable mistake costs a day or two.

Every template in this library already avoids them.

  • Blanks out of order

{{1}}, {{2}}, {{5}}, {{4}} is rejected, and so is a missing brace. Number them in order.

  • Symbols inside a blank

#, $ or % inside the braces is rejected. Write ₹{{2}} or {{3}}% off instead.

  • Starting or ending on a blank

'{{1}}, your order has shipped' is rejected. Start and end with your own words.

  • More blanks than words

A short message that is mostly blanks is rejected. Each blank should be a real detail.

  • No samples

Every blank needs a sample value when you submit, so Meta can read the message as a customer would.

  • Asking for sensitive numbers

Never ask for a card number, bank account number, Aadhaar or PAN in a template.

  • Threats or shaming

Mentioning legal action, or telling others about an unpaid bill, is rejected.

  • A copy of one you have

A template with the same message and footer as one already in your account is rejected.

Questions

WhatsApp templates, answered.

  • How long does Meta take to approve a WhatsApp template?

Meta says a WhatsApp template review takes up to 24 hours, and an appeal against a rejection is also decided within 24 hours. Most lost time comes from rejections with simple causes, such as variables out of order, a symbol inside a variable, or a message that starts or ends with a variable, so check those before submitting.

  • What is the difference between Utility and Marketing WhatsApp templates?

A Utility WhatsApp template is an update about something the customer did or asked for, such as an order, a booking, a bill or a refund, with no offer in it. A Marketing template is anything meant to sell: offers, new stock, invitations and reminders to come back. Meta treats a template that mixes the two, such as an order update with a discount code, as Marketing, and prices the two categories separately.

  • What happens if Meta moves my WhatsApp template to another category?

Meta can move an approved WhatsApp template to another category, for example from Utility to Marketing, when its content fits the other category better. The template stays approved, the business gets a day's notice before the change applies, and it can appeal within 60 days.

  • How many WhatsApp templates can one business have?

A WhatsApp Business account whose business is not yet verified with Meta can hold up to 250 templates. After the business is verified, it can hold up to 6,000.

  • Can I use these WhatsApp templates in Hella?

Yes. Copy a template's text into Hella's template screen, change the details, add a sample for each variable and submit it to Meta from there. Once Meta approves it, your team can send it to the customers you choose, and the replies arrive in Hella's shared inbox.

An approved template is half the job. Hella sends it, and your team answers the replies together.
